Is there a cost for ARAS assistance?
ARAS provides free, independent and confidential information and advocacy support to older people and, where appropriate, their representatives.
Can I remain anonymous?
Yes. You can contact ARAS anonymously to receive information and discuss your concerns in general terms.
If you would like ARAS to provide advocacy support or take action on your behalf, we may need your name and contact details. ARAS will explain what information is required and seek your consent before sharing your information, unless disclosure is required by law or there are serious concerns about imminent harm.
Will I have to come to the ARAS office to meet an advocate?
Not necessarily. ARAS will discuss the most appropriate way to meet with you. Depending on your circumstances, meetings may be arranged at the ARAS office, your home or another appropriate location.
Does ARAS support older people living in rural and remote areas?
Yes. ARAS provides advocacy and information services across South Australia. Support may be provided by telephone or other appropriate means, and advocates may travel to regional areas where appropriate.
Can ARAS answer my questions about aged care services?
Yes. ARAS can provide information about Australian Government-funded aged care services, including residential aged care, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Support at Home, as well as information about aged care rights, services and options.
How can ARAS assist me?
ARAS can provide information and advocacy support to help you understand and exercise your rights, make informed decisions, raise concerns or complaints, navigate the aged care system and address issues relating to your aged care services.
Can ARAS give me some tips about speaking up?
Yes. ARAS can provide information and support to help you understand your rights, explore your options and build your confidence to raise concerns yourself, where you feel comfortable doing so.
You can also access OPAN's Self-advocacy Toolkit for practical information about speaking up for better aged care.
Can ARAS give legal advice?
ARAS can make a referral to professional legal advice and information service.
Can an ARAS advocate meet with me at my aged care home?
Yes. ARAS advocates can arrange to meet with you at your aged care home where appropriate. Your privacy and confidentiality will be respected, and the advocate will discuss the meeting arrangements with you.
Is the ARAS office wheelchair accessible?
Yes. The ARAS office at 175 Fullarton Road, Dulwich is wheelchair accessible. The office is located on the ground floor and can be accessed by the ramp at the front of the building or by the lift from the basement car park.
Please contact ARAS before your visit if you require lift access or have other accessibility requirements. An accessible toilet is available within the ARAS office.

Is it useful for the advocate to speak directly to an alleged abuser?
ARAS does not confront an alleged abuser, as this may increase the risk to the older person or ARAS staff. ARAS will work with the older person to explore available options and strategies to support their rights, wellbeing and safety.
Would ARAS advocate for me even though I live in a remote community?
Yes. ARAS provides advocacy and information services across South Australia. Support may be provided by telephone or other appropriate means, and advocates may travel to regional areas where appropriate.
Can I choose to speak with an Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal advocate?
Yes. ARAS has specialist Aboriginal Advocates who provide culturally safe information and advocacy support to Aboriginal older people.
Can I have my family with me when I meet with the ARAS advocate and the service provider?
Yes. You can choose to have a family member, representative or other support person involved. ARAS will continue to work with and at your direction wherever possible, and your rights, wishes and preferences will remain central to the advocacy provided.
