Privacy

ARAS is committed to protecting the security, privacy and confidentiality of personal information and complies with the Privacy Act 1988, the Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act 2017 and the 13 Australian Privacy Principles. 

ARAS collects, records and stores personal information to provide advocacy and related services and to identify and tailor appropriate information and assistance.

To protect personal information, ARAS will:

  • provide the option to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym, noting that this may limit the range of services or advocacy support ARAS can provide;
  • where possible, collect information directly from the older person or their representative;
  • store information securely, with access limited to authorised personnel;
  • take reasonable steps to protect personal information held by ARAS;
  • securely destroy personal information when it is no longer required, unless it is required to be retained by law;
  • provide access to personal information in accordance with the Privacy Policy and allow requests for incorrect information to be corrected;
  • consider requests for personal information to be deleted, noting that legal or other requirements may require ARAS to retain the information; and
  • disclose personal information in the circumstances outlined in the Privacy Policy, including with consent, where required by law or a government agency, or where ARAS considers that an older person may be at serious risk of imminent harm. 

Accessing or correcting personal information

Requests to access or correct personal information held by ARAS can be made in writing to the Privacy Officer. Proof of identity may be required before access is provided.

A complaint about a breach of privacy can be made to the ARAS Privacy Officer by telephone on (08) 8232 5377 or by email at aras@agedrights.asn.au.
